BETA SIGMA PHI HISTORY

Beta Sigma Phi is a women’s international social, cultural, and service organization – the largest of its kind in the world.

Founded in Abilene, Kansas in 1931 by Walter W. Ross, the non-academic sorority now has 165,000 members in chapters in every state of the United States, each Canadian province, and 30 other countries. The Greek letters of its name represent Life, Learning and Friendship, which is the organization’s motto and the yellow rose – its symbol.

Our members are women of all ages, interests and educational and economic backgrounds and membership provides opportunities to contribute to your community, develop lifelong friendships, and polish leadership skills. Should you move, membership offers you the opportunity to transfer to a chapter in your new location – ensuring instant friendships.

Typical chapters enjoy socials that range from informal gatherings to festive affairs. Fascinating cultural programs offer insight into subjects that range from the arts to gardening to in-home businesses.

In 1948, the International Endowment Fund was established with voluntary contributions from all over the world, realizing that through the combined efforts of Beta Sigma Phi chapters lay the means of great good to mankind. Over the years, Canadian foundations have received contributions:  The Arthritis Society, and The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Deserving students have received scholarships and prominent Canadian authors have received awards e.g. Margaret Lawrence.

Internationally, our members raise more than $3 million for local charities and donate over 200,0000 volunteer hours in an average year. Donations of approximately $1 million have been made to medical research and treatment and to such institutions as homes for children.

Each chapter determines its own service projects and participation is always voluntary. Chapters have created their own International Funds that donate millions of dollars to health research groups, hunger projects, and other worthwhile causes. Members and their families can receive assistance through our International Loan, Scholarship and Disaster Funds.

What Makes Us Unique? Our sisterhood constantly redefines itself through the diversity and vitality of its members who share their ideas, talents and enthusiasm.
